Colonialen

Colonialen is a long-running Bergen restaurant group whose flagship, the set-menu Colonialen 44, built a strong reputation for polished, seasonal Nordic cooking, charming attentive service and a serious, natural-leaning wine list at relatively accessible prices for its ambition. Critics also rate the group's casual spin-offs (Matbar's snack-and-natural-wine bar, the easygoing Litteraturhuset) well, though execution is called a bit inconsistent at the more casual venues. Note the group has been contracting: the Litteraturhuset venue announced closure in late 2025 (persistent post-pandemic losses), Colonialen 44 no longer appears on the official site, and current operating venues are Sann, Jest and the Fetevaren deli.
