Verdensteatret is celebrated as one of the world's oldest cinemas still in use (opened 1916), a beautifully preserved building whose 1921 Sverre Mack wall paintings of Norwegian folk tales are a draw in themselves. Reviewers love catching a film or concert here and the attached hip cafe-bar, from which you can bring coffee or beer into the comfortable, table-equipped auditorium; tickets are seen as inexpensive by Tromsø standards. The cafe is a quiet daytime hangout that turns into a DJ-driven dance spot on Friday nights, and it's widely called the city's most alternative cultural venue.
