Bankeråt is Copenhagen's original bohemian café — running since the early '90s and instantly recognisable for its theatrical decor of stuffed animals, mannequins, dark wood and red walls, a deliberate rebuke to Scandi minimalism. It draws students, artists and night owls for brunch (three sizes, including a big English one), burgers and beers in a room that has genuine character. Food and service get mixed reviews, so come for the atmosphere and the hearty portions more than culinary fireworks.
