Café Sorgenfri is a Copenhagen smørrebrød institution, in business since 1797 in a building rebuilt after the 1795 fire, tucked on Brolæggerstræde near Nytorv. It does the real thing: a broad menu of classic open sandwiches, from herring to smoked salmon to the beloved steak tartare with egg yolk, at prices that are fair by central-Copenhagen standards. The room is rustic and cozy and the service warm if occasionally brusque in that old-school way; it's busy at lunch, so book ahead. One of the city's most reliable spots for traditional frokost.
